Early Riser III ~ Paper Collage is a medium that’s so fascinating. Creating an artwork out of one-dimensional materials is sometimes more challenging than it looks. Here, the pieces are connected or layered from found materials that are very often found in your own household. Bits of magazines, newspapers, greeting cards, paper napkins, etc. By adding some plastic netting from a grocery bag of tangerines or an object to your creation, you’re then moving into a Mixed Media piece. As a collector, I find life in all materials! Whatever ‘speaks’ to you tells the story. It may take a moment in time to create or just as easily take weeks to find just the right piece, and all the while, learning about layering, colour, composition and space - and then in the end if you hate it, walk away and when you come back it will tell you how to fix it. I suppose I could suggest running over it with the wheel of your car to make it one-dimensional, and maybe that would make your artwork look fantastic, but that may be dangerous to suggest and in very bad form. Don’t attempt this, don’t even think about it, just get your scissors, cut out the best bits of your creation and use them in your next masterpiece!
