Penny's Postcard Photo Collage - Beach Box #8 - Assemblage Art - Size 18"H x 22"W
We all have a gazillion favourites. Think of it - your favourite beach, pizza, hair colour, shoe style, relative, lettuce, guitar, restaurant, time of day, and so on. One of my favourite Photo Mediums is B&W Postcards, and I’ve collected them on my travels for some time. One day I realized that I generally have 7 categories of B&W Postcards. I made each category into a photo collage and made a Beach Box Assemblage Art out of those seven. They are shown in the Beach Box photo from the top, moving left to right: Women in Film; Graphics; Love; Men in Film; The Mind; Motion and Fitness in centre. The top of the display box was set on its side to fix a grill that holds a magnifying photo filter lens, removable from the top to view more detail. Two curios are fixed onto a shelf to break up the pattern - a metal Hollywood thimble with Mann’s Chinese Theatre plaque and a metal thimble of the Wizard of Oz’s Tin Man with his Oil can. Such is the mind of ‘me’.
Beach Box #6 - Alice in Wonderland Assemblage Art - 16"h x 10"w x 7"d
ALICE IN WONDERLAND - Who would have thought the children’s novel of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll would have been so hugely popular even today? The many Illustrators of the “Adventures in Wonderland” (1865) and “Through the Looking Glass” (1871) are more than 100. I’ve always been fascinated by the story and the illustrations. The best known Illustrator is English born, (Sir) John Tenniel, who created the first 42 images for Carroll (though initially he only chose 1 of a Humpty Dumpty-like sketch). Some countries first banned the book saying that it was an insult to have humans speak as (lesser) animals and some were banned due to their controversial nature regarding drugs and derogatory characterizations of various groups. But today it still lives on, and has been translated into 175 languages. My Assemblage Art piece is dedicated to a plethora of talented Illustrators that keep on pushing their artistic image flare of this important book into the modern world.

BEACH BOX #2 ~ A PERSONAL DOWNLOAD: In my first Newsletter I was talking about Assemblage Art (I call mine, 'Beach Boxes'). This is an Art Medium that dates back to 1912 though I discovered it in 2009. In a magazine article, an Assemblage Art Artist described how she saved her Grandmother’s treasures that she inherited, which particularly struck a chord with me. It was becoming apparent that my own collection(s) of small mementos from the past could be kept in check by placing them in one special place - to enjoy when it was the right time. So, as described, I glued some of my memorabilia inside a handsome wooden wine box. When closed and resting on its side I place a small plant or books, then when opened and stood on end, the box revealed my treasures - Simple & great! I have made Beach Boxes for other people in need of help with their treasures too which was quite a rewarding feeling for me to share their interests. It’s a simple way of saving your memories and allowing you to move on to the next art chapter. I have created about 20 Beach Boxes with my own collections - all of which are of different subjects & designs and I will share a few more here in future days… just for fun!
